A Luling man was killed Wednesday, the result of a six-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 in St. Charles Parish, authorities said.

According to Louisiana State Police, 51-year-old Reginal Haywood of Avondale was driving a 2008 GMC Sierra east on U.S. 90 when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the grassy median and entered into the westbound lanes of U.S. 90.

Occurring shortly after 5 p.m., the Sierra began rotating across the westbound lanes and was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 53-year-old Craig Guidry of Gray. Guidry was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The Sierra was then struck by a 2016 Nissan Sentra driven by 59-year-old Brent Petit of Luling, who authorities said was wearing a seat belt but pronounced dead on the scene as a result of injuries sustained during the collision.

After the initial impacts, State Police said Haywood’s Sierra continued rotating and was struck by three additional vehicles that were traveling west on U.S. 90:

• Laura Appleberry, 53, of Luling was driving a 2015 Honda Civic, was wearing her seat belt and was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

• Marisa Gwinn, 28, of Thibodaux was driving a 2017 Toyota Corolla, was wearing her seat belt and suffered minor injuries.

• Masimo Vasquez Jr., 51, of New Sarpy was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra, was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Troopers said their investigation is ongoing into the cause of the crash, adding, via press release, that it is unknown if speed and impairment are factors.

Haywood provided a blood sample for toxicological analysis that will be performed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Authorities said no criminal charges or citations were initially issued.
