WESTWEGO — Riverside Academy got its revenge Wednesday night. More importantly, the Rebels got a win.
Just a few weeks after opening its 2015 campaign with a 49-58 loss to West Jefferson, Riverside got vengeance with a solid 62-47 win over the Bucs on the first day of action in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic at the Alario Center. Riverside Academy is serving as host of the sixth annual event. Play will wrap up today with a full slate of finals.
Riverside finished second to national powerhouse Montverde (Fla.) last year, the team that produced LSU’s Ben Simmons. The Rebels won the tournament in 2013 and 2014.
In Wednesday’s game, Malik Crowfield led the scoring with 21 points, including 13 in the first half. Herb McGee scored 13 points and Butler scored 14 points. That win propelled the Rebels into a second-round game against Lafayette Christian on Thursday. Riverside (9-3) won that contest 65-60 to advance in the tournament. Jared Butler led the Rebels with 29 points, hitting six 3-pointers.
Also competing in the tournament, Riverside’s girls defeated Sacred Heart Thursday, 46-41, in the first round of tournament play to improve to 11-4.
The rest of the St. John the Baptist Parish teams used the first full week of the new year to return to full action, as well. Tuesday night saw heavy slate of games from the area’s teams.
East St. John
East St. John’s girls routed H.L. Bourgeois Tuesday night, 64-28, in a District 7-5A game. After just one quarter of play, East St. John led 16-1. Nakendria Wilson led with 18 points, Meah Monroe scored 17 and Brianna Thompson scored 12. With the win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in district play. The girls game against St. Charles Catholic, scheduled for Wednesday night, was canceled.
The East St. John boys lost their District 7-5A opener to H.L. Bourgeois, 67-58, in Gray, dropping to 8-9 on the season.
St. Charles Catholic
The St. Charles Catholic boys lost a close one, 53-49, on the road at Class 5A St. Amant Tuesday. Jordan Arceneaux scored 28 points, and Jobe Kelly added 12.
The Comets (8-9) beat Northlake Christian 48-42 Thursday.
The girls also lost a close one to De La Salle, 53-49, on Tuesday. Lela Hill continued to lead the team, scoring 30 points in the contest and matching her previous season high (against Hannan).

West St. John
The West St. John boys are trying to get their season on track. On Tuesday the Rams dropped their sixth straight game, losing to St. James 56-51, to fall to 1-9.
The Rams defeated St. James 69-64 on Dec. 16 for their lone win.
The Lady Rams, meanwhile, were 9-5 after beating McDonogh 35, 60-33, on Tuesday. West St. John outscored the Roneagles 19-5 in the first quarter and 20-1 in the third. Maya Trench led the scoring with 24 points, Jaquana Hunter scored 16 and Lakendra Lewis scored 14.
