Hahnville heats up offense against ESJ

RESERVE – On a chilly night at Joe Keller Stadium Tuesday, the Hahnville soccer team heated up its offensive attack.

Brad Berthelot scored four goals and Brandon Kelly added three as the Tigers rolled to a 14-0 District 7-I victory over East St. John.Hahnville improved to 2-0 in district play while East St. John fell to 0-2.Kelly had the first scoring opportunity of the game as he moved in down the left side two minutes into the game but had his shot sail wide left.

Jeremy Davey then centered a corner kick that was knocked out by Letz Miller. East St. John took possession with Billy Hogan putting a shot ongoal that was grabbed by Tiger goal tender Matt Cummins.

At the seven minute mark of the first half, John Keller took a deflection off a corner kick and knocked a shot toward the goal that was deflected away by Wildcats goalkeeper Paul Kohles. Davey then lined a shot on netthat was grabbed by Kohles.

On the Tigers’ next trip down the field, Davey came down the right side and crossed a pass over to Adam Bordelon. Bordelon took the pass on theundefended left side of the net and knocked it in, making it 1-0 at the 10- minute mark. Berthelot made it 2-0 two minutes later, heading in a cornerkick by Davey.

Kohles kept the game close over the next seven minutes, grabbing two shots apiece by Keller and Kelly and one by Travis Webre in front of the net. Bordelon then tried a shot from the left corner that hit off the topcrossbar.

Kelly came right back after the Tigers intercepted a pass, charging into the box and knocking a shot past Kohles at the 20-minute mark. ShawnMire then deflected a shot off Kohles from the right side of the net, increasing the lead to 4-0 with 17 minutes left in the half.

Webre followed by stealing a goal kick and angling a shot toward the right side of the net to make it 5-0 at the 25-minute mark. Berthelot got hissecond goal at the 27-minute mark, taking a corner kick and knocking it in for a 6-0 lead.

Berthelot got the hat trick two minutes, taking a deflection off a shot from the right corner by Webre and knocking it past Kohles for a 7-0 lead.

His fourth goal came at the 33-minute mark as he again took a deflection off a shot by Webre, outracing Kohles for the ball in the box, and angled it into the right corner of the net. Kelly got the Tigers’ final goal of the halfby taking a deflection off a shot by Davey and putting it in. A diving stopby Matthew Stephens prevented a shot by Mire in the final minute.

Hahnville kept up the pressure early in the second half as Jeff Kerlec knocked in a deflection. East St. John had an opportunity to get on theboard as Chance Blank centered a pass to Timothy Graugnard but Graugnard’s kick sailed wide left. Mire then found Alex Romero in front ofthe net for an 11-0 lead at the 12-minute mark.

Shots by Blank and Hogan over the next five minutes were knocked away by Bordelon and Michael Harmon, respectively. Blank then chased down a passon the left side and angled a shot toward the net with Cummins making a diving grab at the goalpost.

Brandon Guillory made it 12-0 at the 25-minute mark by knocking in a corner kick by Chris Fordham. David Tanner followed at the 29-minutemark by deflecting in a corner kick. C. Donald Richardson concluded thescoring by angling a shot from the left side that deflected off the right goalpost into the net at the 30-minute mark.

“Everybody got to play and that was good,” Hahnville coach Rafael de Vega said. “We were looking forward to district and getting ready for it andthat work is paying off a little bit.”
