RESERVE—Last week marked the 50th Anniversary of the ending of the Vietnam War. According to army.mil, President Obama signed a presidential proclamation in 2012, designating March 29 as the annual observance of Vietnam War Veterans Day. The signing of the proclamation marked the 50th anniversary of the departure of the last American troops from Vietnam — March 29, 1973.
A 13-year long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War was to ensure that every veteran, family, caregiver, and survivor impacted by the difficult years in Vietnam feels the Nation’s gratitude for their sacrifice. Its purpose is to ensure every service member of the Vietnam generation knows their sacrifices mattered and that their service made a difference. It began on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, and will continue through Veterans Day, November 11, 2025.
The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by President Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
