HAHNVILLE — A St. Charles Parish shooter was convicted of murder this week following the 2014 Christmas night killing of a Houston man at an area bar.

A St. Charles Parish jury found Larry Thompson guilty of second degree murder and obstruction of justice Wednesday, according to Attorney General Jeff Landry.

“(The) verdict is the culmination of years of great investigative work by Sheriff Greg Champagne’s Office and the prosecutorial efforts by my Assistant Attorneys General Matthew Derbes and Molly Lancaster,” Landry said. “Together, we have brought Mr. Thompson to justice and hopefully delivered some closure to the Scott family.”

The case against Thompson, 37, of Boutte, began when authorities responded to a shots fired call at Butt Cuts Bar at approximately 12:30 a.m. Dec. 26, 2-14, discovering a subject on the bar floor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as David Scott, 23, of Houston, was pronounced dead on the scene.

A second shooting victim was taken to St. Charles Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the foot. The victim, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as an innocent bystander, was struck in the gunfire.

Police said the shooting erupted due to a dispute between Thompson and Scott over a female acquaintance.

Kenner Police Department officers and U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Task Force personnel arrested Thompson three days after the killing, tracking him to a female acquaintance’s apartment in Kenner.

Champagne said members of the Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals “worked around the clock” locating Thompson, adding information from the public greatly aided the investigation.

Law enforcement authorities conducted surveillance on the apartment building where they found Thompson’s car hidden, Champagne said, adding it was the same place he was arrested.
