LUTCHER — A Lutcher man was indicted by a St. James Parish Grand Jury last week for murder, District Attorney Ricky L. Babin’s office announced.
23rd Judicial District Public Information Officer Tyler Cavalier said the Grand Jury returned a True Bill of Indictment on Burnell Gordon, 35, on the charges of second degree murder, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities and aggravated criminal damage to property.
On June 15, St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a shooting report on Courseault Street in Lutcher. During the course of the investigation, detectives secured an arrest warrant for Gordon in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Darrell Johnson.
Gordon is accused of shooting Johnson at Johnson’s residence. Gordon remains incarcerated at the St. James Parish Detention Center awaiting arraignment.
No arraignment date has been set as of this time, Cavalier said.
Assistant District Attorney Bruce Mohon is the lead prosecutor on the case.
Sheriff Willy Martin Jr. said Johnson was pronounced dead at the hospital after medical staff fought to save his life.
“We have no reason to believe anyone else was involved in the shooting,” Martin said at the time of the shooting, adding authorities are not releasing the shooting’s suspected motive.
