LAPLACE — A Garyville man was killed this week while trying to catch frogs in a St. John the Baptist Parish bayou, authorities said.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents recovered the body of Garyville’s Nelson Trosclair at approximately 3 a.m. Monday following his death in Mississippi Bayou.
Adam Einck, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman, said Trosclair and two other men were in a boat frogging when they hit a submerged tree limb, ejecting Trosclair from the 17-foot flat bottom vessel into the water.
The two other men on the boat tried to retrieve Trosclair but were unsuccessful and called 911 for assistance, authorities said.
Einck said it is not believed alcohol was a factor in the collision, adding authorities do not suspect foul play and all involved are cooperating with police.
According to Einck, residents can harvest frogs all year except April and May.
“You go out in the swamps and bayous, and a lot of people use flashlights and you can find them that way,” Einck said.
“Then you just roll your boat up to (the frogs), grab them with your hands and put them in the boat.”
Einck said Wildlife and Fisheries agents are investigating the area where the incident occurred, trying to recreate the damage to the boat and find the submerged limb that caused the collision.
Following the emergency call Monday, Fisheries agents and St. John the Baptist Sheriff Office deputies brought Trosclair, 54, to the Hope Canal boat launch, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on the scene.
Trosclair was recovered without a personal flotation device and his body was turned over to New Orleans Forensic Center to determine a cause of death. A message seeking comment from the New Orleans Forensic Center was not immediately returned Tuesday.
