RESERVE — East St. John completed a boys and girls sweep of Hahnville Friday while West St. John split a double slate in the most recent basketball action.

None of the area’s teams played over the weekend or on Monday because of the Martin Luther King holiday.

East St. John boys basketball coach Yussef Jasmine was thrilled with his team’s effort in a 61-53 win over Hahnville in District 7-5A play. The win was the Wildcats’ third in a row and completed a St. Charles Parish sweep. East St. John defeated Destrehan 63-54 on Jan. 12.

Jasmine said both wins came from gaining control of the tempo.

“Hahnville and Destrehan play two totally different styles,” Jasmine said. “Hahnville is more up-tempo, while Destrehan is a little slower. The key for us is we didn’t allow Hahnville to control the tempo of the game. They wanted to run up and down the court and throw up 3s. We dictated to them what they could do.”

The game opened with a frenetic pace, Jasmine said, but his team calmed it down quickly.

“We didn’t turn the ball over, we kept the ball to run off clock, then we scored when we felt like it,” Jasmine said.

Troy Green led the scoring with 23 points. Jordan Perry added 10 points. They were the only two Wildcats to reach double figures. Allen Williams finished with nine.

“It shows that we can be versatile,” Jasmine said.

The Wildcats were 11-9, 3-1 heading into this week’s action.

East St. John girls coach Stasha Thomas-James also was thrilled following her team’s 59-31 win over Hahnville. She said her team had worked hard on defense heading into the game and it showed.

“It was almost picture perfect,” she said.

Taylor Lipps led the scoring with 15 points. Meah Monroe scored 10. Kynedi Poullard scored nine, as did Nakendria Wilson.

“Our guards were on and our post players were posting up,” Thomas-James said.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 12-7 and 4-1 in the district. After a bye on Friday, they will begin the second round of district play Tuesday against Central Lafourche. Thomas-James said her team is already thinking ahead to the rematch against district leader Destrehan on Feb. 5

“We definitely want to challenge them,” she said.

West St. John

The West St. John girls opened District 12-2A play Friday with a 57-29 win over St. Mary’s. Maya Trench scored 20 points and Jaquana Hunter scored 11.

“I like this new district,” Rams coach Lester Smith said.

“Everything’s close. Last year we were travelling to Donaldsonville, White Castle, Plaquemine.”

The Rams are still doing some serious travelling this season, as well.

Until this week, the team had not played a home game since its Nov. 16 home opener.

“The reason I did it is, you’ve got to go on the road to win,” Smith said. “If you’re home, you’re supposed to win.”

The West St. John boys are not having that kind of luck. After breaking a seven-game losing streak Thursday, the Rams lost a non-district game to Livonia, 50-45, on Friday.

Trevon Borne scored 13 points. Amere Oubre scored 11.

West St. John is now 2-11 as it heads into District 12-2A play this week.

West St. John’s boys and girls teams will travel to St. Charles Catholic on Friday.
