Paper recognizes achievements, efforts

Each Wednesday, L’Observateur recognizes individuals and businesses in the River Parishes who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.
We believe an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.
Because this is a salute to members of the community of the entire River Parishes, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion. This week we salute:
• Albert Burl III and other employees of the 40th Judicial District Drug Court Program, which works to rehabilitate non-violent drug offenders while saving taxpayers money associated with incarceration. Burl said it costs taxpayers about $35 a day to house a prisoner.
• Local author and storyteller AJ Rodriguez, who spends most of her time encouraging children to read and write through visits to schools, where she shares her tales and wisdom.
• St. Joan of Arc Catholic School 1984 graduate Mona Roussel, who recently received the National Catholic Educators Association Distinguished Graduate Award. Roussel, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Southeastern Louisiana University, began her teaching career at SJA in 1992.
• Reserve residents Junior and Regina Remondet, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Feb. 6, 1960, at St. Peter Church.
• Harry Hurst teacher Tammy Windmann, who was recently selected the American Legion Teacher of the Year by the American Legion Post 366 in Destrehan.
