LUTCHER– The LHS boys basketball team had a tough outing at home last Friday night against West St. John in a 61-52 loss while the Lady Bulldogs picked up a win in the closing seconds of an away game against Rummel Transition in a 54-53 victory.
In the game against WSJ, Lutcher fell behind early in front of their home crowd as the Rams stifled their offense, holding them to 17 points by halftime. On the other side of the court, West St. John found the bottom of the net often and in a variety of ways to go ahead by 19 going into the break.
LHS struggled again in the third quarter falling behind 51-26 before recording 26 points in the final period of play, which helped to make it a more respectable 61-52 final score.
The game’s outcome upped West St. John’s record going into the Riverside Academy tournament this week. The loss put the Bulldogs at 2-8 for the season as they headed into the Gerald Furr Classic which is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
LHS fared better in their girl’s game on Friday when they traveled to Metairie to take on Rummel Transition. There, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out a last second win when Randi Donald hit a three-pointer with :09 left in the game to tie the score which allowed Rynique Perkins to take a one-point victory from the free throw line.
The 54-53 final score was preceded by a first half where Lutcher was in control for much of the way. Rummel managed a 20-6 run in the third to take a 42-34 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs tightened it back up with a run of their own to give Donald and Perkins, who scored 20 and 16 respectively, the chance to put them ahead.
The Lady Bulldogs got right back to work this week in the Rumble on the River Tournament in Westwego this week. That tournament is scheduled to finish on Friday to action
