LAPLACE — Even though their district 5A record stayed the same at 3-0 for the week, the East St. John Lady Wildcats volleyball team got in plenty of practice this week, as they looked ahead to more league play.
Stepping out of district for two matches, the Wildcats won a five-game match over Lutcher early in the week, 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 18-25, 15-8.
Then on Thursday, the Wildcats were beaten by Dunham, 19-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-18.
“We got a lot of playing time and that was a good thing,” coach Sandy Stein said. “But I’m still trying to find the right combination for the team. I’ve looking at different groups out there trying to find the best six.”
Today the team will get plenty more chance to show off their talent, as they host the East St. John Cat Scratch tournament.
Games begin at 9 a.m. and go all day. Along with the Wildcats will be Glen Oaks, Reserve Christian and Chapelle in Pool A, with St. Michaels, Scotlandville, White Castle and West Jefferson in Pool B.
The Wildcats got another solid game against Lutcher from Ashlee Cooper, who had 17 kills, then she added 12 more, along with five blocks against Dunham.
Darielle Sanders had 11 kills against Dunham, with Diana Lainez serving four aces in that match.
The Wildcats are now 11-5 on the season, to go with their 3-0 district mark.
League action resumes this next week as they play at Destrehan on Tuesday at Hahnville High, then hosting John Ehret on Thursday.
