LAPLACE — The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 8 p.m. today for portions of Louisiana, including St. John the Baptist Parish, as a low-pressure disturbance travels through the state.

The main threat from the severe weather will be damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes.

Residents are asked to use caution when venturing outdoors during the weather event and dial 911 to report any issues or concerns.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness is in contact with the National Weather Service to receive the latest weather updates and forecasts and Parish crews are on standby.

If a tornado warning should be issued, please be reminded:

• The safest place to be during a tornado is under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture.
• Seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet if a tornado is spotted in the area. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.
• If in a mobile home or vehicle, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter as soon as possible.
