Lutcher finds offense in second quarter

LUTCHER – Lutcher overcame early offensive woes to outscore St. CharlesCatholic, 22-10, in the second quarter on its way to a 45-35 victory in District 9-3A play Tuesday evening.
Lutcher improved to 2-1 in district play and 6-17 overall while St.
Charles Catholic fell to 2-1 and 7-17.
Lutcher trailed 5-4 going into the second quarter and fell behind by three as Linda Simon hit two free throws. But Kaneeka Taylor followed with ajumper from the free throw line two possessions later, opening up a 12-0 run.
I’ana Gaines followed with a bank shot, then grabbed a steal with Tiffany Griffin scoring off a pass by Taylor. Steals by Taylor, Brandy Derbigny andGriffin led to layups by Jessica Williams and Taylor, building the lead to 16-7.
Liz Dufresne pulled St. Charles Catholic to within 18-11 with a 3-pointerfrom the left corner but Taylor answered with two of her own from the left wing to make it 24-13. Taylor added two free throws to make it 26-15 at the half.
Lutcher increased its lead to 34-20 midway through the third quarter on jumpers by Jennifer Detillier and Taylor. Dufresne knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the deficit to 11 but Lutcher answered with free throws by Gaines and a jumper by Detillier to make it 38-25 at the end of the third quarter.
A 3-pointer from the top of the key by Dufresne and a drive by Abby Howard off a deep pass by Nicole Scontrino made it a 10-point game in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. But a score by Williams off a stealby Taylor and free throws by Taylor and Detillier help keep the margin in double figures.
Taylor led all scorers with 15 points. Williams added nine and Gaineseight for the Lady Bulldogs.
Dufresne paced the Lady Comets with 13 points. Marci Martin contributedsix points and Simon tossed in five.
Weber got the first points of the game with a jumper from the left baseline at the 4:10 mark of the first quarter. Amy Bourgeois built thelead to four on a jumper from the right side with 2:12 left before Lutcher got on the scoreboard 10 seconds later on a free throw by Gaines.
The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 4 as Javonne Ross converted a three- point play with 1:52 left. A free throw by Simon with 42 seconds leftregained the lead for the Lady Comets going into the second quarter.
