A sixth grader at LaPlace Elementary was arrested for having a loaded gun on campus Tuesday morning, according to St John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office.
The 12-year-old boy was arrested for illegal firearm possession on school grounds and illegal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, according to Sheriff Mike Tregre of St. John the Baptist Parish.
A teacher at 393 Greenwood Drive, Laplace, confronted the boy after learning about the weapon, Tregre said, following a report from another student.
The boy had a gun tucked in the waistband of his pants and handed it over when questioned by the teacher, authorities reported. The school then contacted the resource officer from the Sheriff’s Office at approximately 11:46 a.m. No one was injured, and there were no reports of the boy pointing the gun at or threatening anyone.“The teacher did an outstanding job,” Tregre said.
The investigation continues as the Sheriff’s Office seeks to find out where the boy got the gun and why he brought it to school. His story keeps changing, Tregre reports.
“We take every threat seriously, and we will fully investigate any threats. We’re going to do our job,” Tregre said Tuesday evening. A judge ordered authorities to keep the boy overnight until a court hearing can take place on Wednesday.
St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Cleo Perry Jr. released the following statement about the arrest:
“Dear SJBP Parents and Guardians:

I want to encourage staff, students, parents, and community stakeholders to speak up if they know or see something concerning.
