LAPLACE — Sales Strategist Jess Walker has called St. John the Baptist Parish home for most of her life. As the newest member of the L’OBSERVATEUR team, she will meet with business owners, nonprofit directors and local leaders to continue the publication’s 110-year legacy of serving the River Parishes.

Using a variety of print and digital advertising tools, Walker will increase publicity for businesses and organizations that form the heart of the community while keeping local families abreast of the many resources that exist in their backyard.

L’OBSERVATEUR General Manager Christine Browning said it is a pleasure to welcome Walker to the LaPlace NewsMedia team.
“With several years of customer service working for Fortune 500 companies, she brings a lot to the table,” Browning said. “She is ready and willing to help our local community.”

Walker, 30, grew up in LaPlace and graduated from East St. John High School in Reserve. She went on to study business management at Southeastern Louisiana University. She is only two semesters away from obtaining her second degree from Southeastern, with coursework concentrated on human resources.
Walker became a property owner in St. John Parish after purchasing her first home last year. She looks forward to building new relationships within the community by helping local businesses grow. She said the culture and rich history of the region is what sets the River Parishes apart, from the beautiful architecture seen in plantations and churches to the community that always bands together in times of need.

“I love talking to people and getting to know them. This role will allow me to meet many new people in the River Parishes, where I’ve lived most of my life,” Walker said. “I have worked in positions where I was the sales person, but also on the other side, I’ve held positions where I was the buyer. Between my work history and my education, I believe this job will be the perfect fit for me. I can’t wait to visit local businesses and meet the owners and hear their stories.”

Outside of work, Walker is passionate about ending the stigma surrounding mental health. Her interests also include crafting and baking, and she especially enjoys whipping up fresh strawberry cupcakes complete with strawberry icing.
Walker serves as a role model to all of her nieces and nephews and loves to spoil them every chance she gets.
