LAPLACE — One of St. John the Baptist Parish’s bravest is forever going to be honored for the ultimate sacrifice.

St. John Parish Council Members approved a resolution requesting the Legislature rename Hemlock Street in LaPlace to Spencer’s Way to honor St. John District Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin, who died in the line of duty on Aug. 28.

During a Council meeting Tuesday, Parish President Natalie Robottom said legislative approval is required because Hemlock Street is a state roadway.

Robottom and several Council members expressed their appreciation to Chauvin’s family, who was present for the vote. Robottom said it is fitting the new firehouse under construction will be on the street named after one of the department’s fallen heroes.

Chauvin was killed Aug. 28 when he and two fellow first responders were thrown over a bridge on Interstate 10 near LaPlace when a charter bus crashed into them as they were responding to a traffic wreck.
