4 p.m. Advisory: Hurricane Ida expected to reach Category 4 strength, hurricane warning issued

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH — Hurricane Ida is now expected to reach Category 4 strength before striking the South Louisiana coast Sunday night. The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Warning for St. John the Baptist Parish and surrounding areas.
The 4 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening storm surge inundation Sunday along the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts. According to the NHC, “Extremely life threatening inundation of 10 to 15 feet above ground level is possible within the area from Morgan City, Louisiana to the Mouth of the Mississippi River.”
Ida is expected to produce heavy rainfall across the Central Gulf Coast from Sunday into Monday, which could result in considerable flash flooding.
St. John the Baptist Parish Government Offices will be closed on Monday, August 30, 2021. Parish offices will reopen on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at 8:00 a.m.
