Irving S. “Eph” Vial Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018.

Irving S. “Eph” Vial Sr.

He was 92 years old.

He was the beloved husband of the late Norma Weimer Vial, father and father-in-law of Michael (Khanh) Vial of LaPlace, Glen (Gail) Vial of Destrehan, Richard (Tammy) Vial of Hahnville, Karen (John) Williamson of LaPlace and Irving (Alicia) Vial Jr. of Montz.

He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

A former resident of Good Hope and LaPlace, he is the son of the late Richard John Vial Sr. and Josepha Hymel Vial; brother of the late Richard J. Vial Jr., Dennis L. Vial Sr., Marie Vial Dufrene, Josepha Vial Delaune, Leo J. Vial Sr., Clarence Vial, Harry J. Vial Sr. and Sidney J. Vial Sr.

Irving proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II with the 75th Infantry Division.

He was wounded in France during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

He was the youngest of six brothers who all served during WWII. He was the oldest active member of American Legion Post 195 for 71 years where he served as Post Commander for six years and held many other offices during his membership.

He was also a member of VFW Post 3337. He retired from GATX in 1986 after 44 years of service. He was a member of Ascension Of Our Lord Catholic Church in LaPlace.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 1900 Greenwood Drive in LaPlace on Monday, Feb. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at noon.

Interment follows in St. John Memorial Gardens Cemetery in LaPlace.
