Gerard L. St. Martin

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Gerard L. St. Martin, 88, who passed away on Feb. 13, 2018, at his home in Lafayette.
Burial will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home – Bertrand on Friday, Feb. 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
He was a native of LaPlace and resident of Lafayette since 1960.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1949. He earned his B.A. in French and English at then SLI and his M.A. and Ph.D. in French and Spanish at Tulane University. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.
He began his teaching career at then SLI (The University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1960 where he taught French until his retirement in 1994. Upon his retirement he was a volunteer at the Lafayette Parish Tourist Office and a volunteer at the St. John Cathedral, where he translated records from French to English.
He was also a proofreader for the Acadiana Catholic for several years.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Louise Cornay Christman, his eldest son Gerard L. St. Martin Jr. and wife Patricia St. Martin and family. He is also survived by son Stephen C. St. Martin and his family. He is also survived by one sister, Marie Therese Richhart of Mooresville, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Adele Cornay St. Martin, parents Peter B. St. Martin and Lizette Marie Labarre St. Martin; siblings Peter B. St. Martin Jr., Lynette St. Martin, Leah Soulier, Roland J. St. Martin, Delphine Flynn, and Charles J. St. Martin.
