LAPLACE — The threat level was high on Muirfield Drive in LaPlace.
St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived to the location following a reported knife threat to a local resident.
Deputies eventually discovered a male subject barricading himself inside a third floor room that led to a balcony on the home’s exterior.
The man further escalated the tense situation by climbing over the balcony and hanging from the side of the balcony, clinging to the rail. That’s when Lt. Greg Baker made his way to the balcony and convinced the man to take his hand and return to the balcony landing.
“It is my belief that Lt. Baker possibly saved the subject’s life and ended a very tense situation that could have had a different ending,” shift supervisor Lt. Jason Raborn said.
Baker said teamwork between many officers allowed for the peaceful rescue, which took place Dec. 4
Baker’s patience and perseverance were honored Wednesday by the St. John Business Association, which recognized him as Officer of the Month during a celebration at Petra Restaurant & Lounge in LaPlace.
