LAPLACE — Dedicated to supporting the people and organizations that make up the heart of St. John the Baptist Parish, the LaPlace Lions Club is hosting fundraisers in the coming weeks to bring the community together and raise proceeds for charitable works.

Registration for the 10th annual LaPlace Lion’s Club Charity Golf Classic and the renowned Krewe du Monde XXXIX Ball and Parade is open to the community this month, LaPlace Lions Club members said.

The Charity Golf Classic kicks off at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at Riverlands Golf & Country Club, 500 Fairway Dr. in LaPlace. Registration is $75 a player through Jan. 23, at which point the cost increases to $85.

Local Lions perform eyesight tests throughout St. John the Baptist Parish.

Players can register the day of the event beginning at 11 a.m.

Due to the filming of a Netflix production in St. John the Baptist Parish, the annual Krewe du Monde Ball will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

The annual event is unique because it’s the only Carnival Ball in the New Orleans region open to the public, according to Lions Club first vice president and Captain of Krewe du Monde William Millet.

He said admission for the formal event, $75 for individuals and $150 for couples, pays for five hours of food, drinks and live entertainment courtesy of River Parish Community Theatre under the direction of Darryl Clement.

“The theme this year is Krewe du Monde goes to the Oscars,” Millet said.

“Darryl Clement has promised an extraordinary show. It’s going to be a spectacular night.”

Free transportation to the Pontchartrain Center is available to St. John Parish residents, Millet said.

Information on how to reserve a spot on a bus is available with the purchase of a ticket from Roussel’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts in LaPlace or Gramercy or online at laplacelions.club.

Money collected from Krewe du Monde and the Golf tournament funds Lion’s Club initiatives in St. John Parish and beyond, according to President Daniel Kurica.

Kurica said the Lion’s Club is internationally known to provide assistance to crippled children and organizations relating to diseases of sight and hearing.

The LaPlace Lion’s Club also works closely with the St. John Ministry of Care, Boy Scouts, Boys and Girl’s State and the Greater New Orleans Therapeutic Riding Center in LaPlace, Kurica said.

Service ventures include securing meals for the elderly and underprivileged during holiday seasons, taking part in Parish beautification efforts and providing free eyesight screenings.

“The biggest thing is to give back to the community and stay involved in charitable and philanthropic projects,” Kurica said. “We want to promote the good things here in St. John Parish.”
