With the start of football season came the opportunity for my granddaughter Adeline to wear a team shirt to school.

“Why do I have to wear this shirt?” the kindergartner asked.

“Because there’s a game tonight so you get to wear a football shirt.”

“I don’t want to. Why do I have to? I don’t even know how to play!”

We assured her that she would not be put in the game.

A few days later, Adeline did sustain an injury when she hit her head on a shopping cart. Her 4-year-old cousin jumped into action.

“Let’s get her home,” Olivia said. “We have to make sure she’s OK. Lolli, do you have an X-ray machine at your house?”

Olivia was disappointed by my answer, and fortunately an X-ray machine wasn’t necessary.

I laugh at their conversations, then wonder what God thinks of my own confusions, questions and expectations.

It’s always a relief for me to read James 1:5, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”

God invites me to ask Him about things I don’t understand.
