St. John braces for Hurricane Harvey rain; sandbags available

LAPLACE — River Parishes residents are urged to make preparations for severe weather and heavy rainfall by clearing catch basins and drains and removing debris and tree limbs at homes and businesses, as well as monitoring weather stations closely.

Prolonged heavy rainfall for five to seven days is the main threat for the local area associated with Hurricane Harvey, expected to make landfall on the Texas Coast late tonight or early Saturday morning.

Approximately 5 to 10 inches of rainfall are expected with isolated higher amounts depending on track.

Out of precaution, sand and bags are available at the locations listed below: (please bring a shovel)

  • St. John Community Center, LaPlace
  • Railroad Avenue Fire Station , Reserve
  • Ezekiel Jackson Park – Garyville
  • Wallace Fire Station
  • Lucy Fire Station
  • Westbank Complex
  • Pleasure Bend Fire Station

The Emergency Preparedness Department and all essential staff are receiving daily briefings in contact with the National Weather Service and Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for updates and changes.
