Heavy rainfall predicted through Wednesday, strong winds & isolated tornadoes possible

LAPLACE — The National Weather Service is predicting extended periods of heavy rainfall to develop beginning Saturday afternoon as a slow-moving cold front travels along the Gulf Coast and stalls early next week.
Forecasters are predicting 3 to 4 inches of rainfall possible for area through Wednesday with strong wind gusts and isolated tornadoes as additional threats.
Although breaks in the rainfall are anticipated, saturated grounds, extensive rainfall in short periods of time and higher than normal Lake Levels can lead to flash flooding and street flooding in low-lying areas. The
Public Works Department and Utilities are making preparations by checking all pump stations, lift stations and drainage canals throughout the Parish.
Public Works and Utilities Crews are staged and will be on hand in the event any issues occur.
Residents should be advised that the current Flood Warning issued for our area is associated with water levels on the Mississippi River in which a levee protects. If flooding is imminent due to weather, a Flash Flood Warning will be issued by NWS.
Residents are asked to secure garbage cans and any yard debris as best as they can and pick up tree branches to avoid entering the drainage system during the weather event. Residents should call 9-1-1 to report drainage, sewage or flooding problems IMMEDIATELY.
Please use caution when venturing outdoors or operating vehicles in heavy rainfall and refrain from driving through ponding water.
