RESERVE — Specific goals and objectives expected from St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District principals and assistant principals are going to be shared with School Board members.

Superintendent Kevin George told Board members the request seemed reasonable, adding he would need to seek legal opinion on if evaluations could also be shared because those were part of the employees’ personnel jackets.

The greater sharing of School District performance followed discussion at April 6’s School Board meeting, where School Board Member Russ Wise sought more information and input on administration performance.

“The Board has absolutely no control whatsoever over our employees,” he said. “While (the superintendent) may set goals and objectives each year with these individual plans, there is no way for us, as a Board, to determine whether or not they are being made. That is not available to us or the general public.”

The discussion came before the Board approved — with Wise dissenting — modified policies for District contracts and compensation.

Wise stressed to George that he felt the superintendent is doing “an excellent job” selecting and evaluating staff members but wanted additional input and oversight into the process.

“Even in a two-year contract, we should know specific goals and objectives that are to be accomplished in that two-year period,” Wise said.

“There is no other way for the Board itself to determine whether or not these folks are performing up to expectations.

“To me, we need to have a review of these contracts before they are signed by every party and that each contract should have, among other things, specific goals and objectives that the Board has input on.”

Although not specifically outlined in the contract they sign, George said all administrators agree to goals and objectives, which include items like student learning targets.

According to George, he performs mid-year and post-year evaluations with each administrator concerning goal progress.

Following a prompt from School Board Member Nia Mitchell last week, George said the individual goals and objectives would be shared.
