Keller: Prayer delivers right letter
Published 12:01 am Wednesday, April 5, 2017
Last week, as I looked through my mail at the post office, the postmaster said, “I see you wrote yourself a letter.” I said, “Not lately!”
It was a letter in a white envelope addressed to me with the same return address. Inside, roughly packaged in a small piece of paper, was a printed note and a small cross. On the front of the cross were the words “Jesus Loves You,” and the note read “A prayer should be like taking a bath, but it should be done more than once a week.”
The anonymous sender wrote: I learned that from Rev. Junius Cureau.
Rev. Cureau was a black man who has been deceased over 20 years. He had a beard, rode a bike, worked at Godchaux Sugars and always preached about Jesus. He had a habit of calling me early in the morning and was always an encourager.
He knew my dad and told me how my dad was one of the few men who always respected and listened to him as he shared the Bible.
The prayer, written by Verna Thomas and titled “My Cross in My Pocket” follows:
I carry a cross in my pocket
A simple reminder to me
Of the fact that I am a Christian
No matter where I may be.
This little cross is not magic
Nor is it a good luck charm
It isn’t meant to protect me
From every physical harm.
It’s not for identification
For all the world to see
It’s simply an understanding
Between my Savior and me.
When I put my hand in my pocket
To bring out a coin or key
The Cross is there to remind me
Of the price He paid for me.
It reminds me too, to be thankful
For my blessings day by day
And to strive to serve Him better
In all that I do and say.
It’s also a daily reminder
Of the peace and comfort I share
With all who know my Master
And give themselves to His care.
So I carry a cross in my pocket
Reminding no one but me
That Jesus Christ is Lord of my life
If only I’ll let Him be.
(A special thanks to whoever sent it to me. I needed that!)
