LAPLACE — It wasn’t the way the St. Charles Catholic boys soccer team wanted the season to end.

The Comets, the two-time District 6-IV champion and the No. 12 seed, were eliminated from the playoffs Wednesday night by No. 5 seed Westminster Christian Academy, 5-0, on the road in Opelousas.

The Crusaders will play in next week’s semifinal. The championship match is scheduled for Feb. 22 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.

On Thursday, the Comets were trying to look for the silver linings to the abrupt end to their season.

It was the fourth year in row that the team reached at least the second round of the playoffs. The Comets advanced to the quarterfinal round in 2015, but have yet to get beyond that round.

Andrew Rodrigue, one of nine seniors on the squad, said Wednesday night was rough for the team.

The Crusaders (16-17) scored two goals in the first half and three in the second half. Michael Burleigh led the scoring with three goals.

Goalkeeper Corey Pellegrin had four saves to help keep the Comets from scoring.

“They came out real strong and passed all around us,” Rodrigue said. “They just took our defense apart. They had one really good dude. He scored all their goals for them.”

Despite the loss, Rodrigue said he was happy with the way his senior season went. The Comets went through District 6-IV with an unblemished 6-0 record, and finished the regular season 11-7.

It was a major turnaround after the team started the season 1-6.

Coach Sean LeBlanc said he scheduled some tougher teams early in the season to help get the Comets ready for the playoffs. They went on to finish with an 11-game win streak.

“Winning district was big for us,” Rodrigue said. “That was one of our goals, plus we beat Riverside, which is our big rival. Once we got into the playoffs, we wanted to see how far we could get.”
