St. John Parish under Freeze Warning, Wind Chill Advisory

LAPLACE — A Freeze Warning and Wind Chill Advisory are in effect for portions of Louisiana, including St. John the Baptist Parish, through 9 a.m. Saturday.
Areas of rain could possibly mix with or convert to light sleet and freezing rain Friday evening and icing of roadways is possible.
Temperatures are predicted to drop between 27 and 32 degrees with wind chill values of upper teens through Saturday morning.
St. John Parish is monitoring winter weather forecasts and ensuring all winter weather equipment and crews are ready.
Residents should take freeze preparedness measures at home including wrapping and protecting exposed pipes, protecting sensitive plants and crops and safely sheltering outdoor pets and farm animals.
Proper use of heating equipment is urged to avoid fires. Above freezing temperatures and warming trend are expected after Saturday into next week.
Safety Tips:
- Make sure there is proper ventilation for all fuel-burning equipment
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Maintain contact with the elderly and those considered at risk
- Get a winter game plan! Have a fully- stocked emergency kit
- Pets and plants should be brought inside your home. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
- Never use your oven to heat your home.
- Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
