Students stand against guns

LAPLACE — A pledge by local students and law enforcement to work together to end gun violence led to some friendly competition in LaPlace last week.
Students and deputies play volleyball Oct. 21 on campus.
St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel led John L. Ory Magnet students to sign the Pledge Against Gun Violence, where students promised to never bring a gun to school, never use a gun to settle a personal problem and use their influence with friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes.
After reciting the pledge, students challenged the Sheriff’s Office in volleyball.
Sheriff Mike Tregre and fellow officers Greg Baker, Brandon Barlow, Ernest Gray, Terence Wilson, Stacey Millet, Vada Lennix and Ingrid Schnyder accepted during festivities Oct. 21 on the third annual Student Pledge Against Gun Violence Day.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana worked with school and law enforcement leaders across southeast Louisiana to encourage schools to participate in this event as part of National Day of Concern about Young People and Gun Violence.
