LAPLACE — Cox Sports hosted the Friday night St. Charles Catholic High School game against Central High School Sept. 23.
The Comets won the thriller over Central 18-12. During the broadcast, COX Sports recognized a student and a teacher from each high school for excellence in and out of the classroom.
The St. Charles Catholic High School Cox Teacher of the Week went to teacher and coach Ty Monica, who is in his 13th year of teaching and coaching for his high school alma mater.
A graduate of Louisiana State University Health and Science Center with a bachelor’s degree in cardiopulmonary science, he teaches geometry and physical education. Outside of the classroom, Monica is a football coach and the head coach of the Lady Comet Softballs Team.
His favorite tradition at SCC is Friday afternoon of game day with pep rally, Mass, and the team meal.
“I hope to challenge the minds of students and teach them how to prepare and be prepared,” Monica said.
The St. Charles Catholic High School Cox Student of the Week was awarded to senior Wesley Melancon, a well-respected and humble senior in the honors program who scored a 5 on the Advanced Placement Language and Composition test, maintains a 4.0 GPA and scored a 30 on the ACT.
Melancon is a football and baseball letterman at SCC. He serves as a leader on the Retreat Team and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
In other news from the game, principal Andrew Cupit presented a $400 donation to Principal David Prescott to assist with the many needs of the students and staff who were impacted by the recent flooding.
The St. Charles Catholic High School students held a dress down day to raise funds for Central High School and East Ascension High School. The SCC Quarterback Club also presented a donation of $500 to the football team at Central High School.
