EDGARD — Last week West St. John High quarterback Austin Alexander was sidelined with a concussion and could only watch as his team fell to Kentwood, 15-0.
This week the senior made up for lost time.
Alexander ran and passed his way through the Woodlawn Panthers defense to help the Rams take a 32-7 victory.
It was a group effort as Alexander spread the ball around.
The senior leader was 10 of 16 for 141 yards and two touchdowns passing and he ran for 94 yards.
Running back Kylon Duhe rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Kedrick Gray ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.
Jamal Walters, who also missed a game earlier this season due to a concussion, had six catches for 80 yards and one touchdown.
Dontrel Davis had two catches for 32 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The defense, meanwhile effectively shut down the Class 4A Panthers, holding the team to 132 yards and four first downs.
The Rams also blocked a punt for a safety in the third quarter.
It wasn’t a perfect night for Alexander, who threw his lone interception on the Rams’ first drive.
After the defense held the Panthers to minus-1 yard on the ensuing possession, however, he got another chance.
This time, Alexander led the Rams on a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by an 8-yard pass to Walters with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The drive seemed to stall at the 29-yard yard line, but the Panthers jumped offside on fourth-and-3 to give the Rams new life.
Woodlawn couldn’t budge the Rams’ defense on the next drive either and were forced to punt again with 9:53 remaining in the half.
West St. John couldn’t capitalize though, and turned the ball over on downs with 6:24 remaining.
This time Woodlawn moved the chains, with Joshua London gaining 37 yards on one play. He then ran in from the 1 with 5:28 to tie the score at 7.
It would be the one bright spot for Woodlawn, which would not get another first down until just before the end of the third quarter.
West St. John made it 15-7 when Duhe broke away for a 56-yard touchdown run with 4:23 to play in the third quarter. Alexander threw to Aason Moll for the 2-point conversion.
After another Panthers three-and-out, the Rams made it 23-7 when Alexander connected with Davis on a 24-yard pass.
Alexander ran for the 2-point conversion.
The Rams would cap the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter when Gray broke free for a 41-yard touchdown.
St. Charles Catholic 22, East Ascension 0
It was a drama free night for the Comets, both on the field and on the sidelines as St. Charles Catholic improved to 4-1 with the win.
Playing on a short field most of the night, the Comets rushed for 177 yards and passed for 57.
Most of that came on a 54-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Lloyd Nash to Rhett LeBlanc in the third quarter that capped the scoring.
Nash started the scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put the Comets ahead 7-0. Narquez Jones added a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
A successful 2-point conversion gave St. Charles a 15-0 lead.
The Comets’ defense held East Ascension to 148 yards.
Thibodaux 38, East St. John 28
The East St. John High Wildcats fell to 2-3 with a loss to the Tigers in Thibodaux.
Wildcats receiver C.J. Turner caught three touchdowns from two different quarterbacks.
Dasmain “Duke” Crosby, who led East St. John to victory last week, got the start again Friday night and threw two touchdown passes.
Marquise Darensbourg, who has battled an injured shoulder for several weeks, did return, however, and threw one touchdown.
The Wildcats also got a score on a fumble recovery by Irvin Benjamin.
East St. John has matched its win total from 2015.
Riverside Academy was idle
The Rebels were off this week as they prepared to open district play Oct. 7 against Newman.
