LAPLACE — The St. Charles Catholic Lady Comets have taken the long road to success recently.

The team travelled to Ruston last weekend and finished second behind Fontainebleau in the Ruston Tournament. The Comets defeated North Caddo, Northwood, Ruston and Airline.

Grace Mohon continues to be the team’s power hitter this season. She had 21 kills and 22 aces in the tournament. Jori Bryant followed with 14 kills, seven aces and three blocks. Abbi Roussel had eight kills, 19 aces and two block.

Mohon and teammate Pylar Zeringue were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Comets followed that with another solid victory over East St. John High Tuesday. St. Charles won 3-0 with scores of 25-15, 26-8, 25-15. Mohon and Zeringue each had four kills. Booke St. Pierre added nine aces and 15 assists.

“We played ESJ much better this time than we had had last week,” Comets coach Meg Ericksen said. “We stopped making simple errors and made them play our game.
Thursday the Comets traveled to Ursuline Academy, losing in four games. Mohon had eight kills, two aces and 13 digs. Bryant had nine kills, seven blocks and two digs. Zeringue scored four kills, five aces and 12 digs and Robbie Duhe had five kills, three blocks, three digs and an ace.

Said Ericksen: “We weren’t really sure what to expect from Ursuline, except that we knew they would be very good. The first two games we really got a feel of how to play then and came back and, I would say, dominated the third game (25-15). I was extremely proud of my girls and how they did not give up, despite losing the first two back-to-back. We are really starting to mesh and I believe we have a very exciting season to look forward to.”

The Comets are competing in the Riverdale Tournament this weekend.

Besides Tuesday’s game against St. Charles, the East St. John High Lady Wildcats opened District 6-I play against Destrehan with a four-game loss.

East St. John took the second game 25-22, but lost the other three 25-14, 25-19, 25-17.

“We played really well, we just fell short,” coach Jarranisha Allen said.

Chardae Berthelot had 18 kills, three block and five aces, but Allen also singled out freshman Tamiyah Gross for her performance in the match.

“It was her first game playing varsity and she led us and kept us in the game with her consistent serving, passing and digging,” Allen said.

The Riverside Academy Lady Rebels, meanwhile, continue their hot streak.

With wins over Thomas Jefferson, E.D. White, Riverdale and Karr, RA is 14-1 on the season.

Their one loss came in tournament play earlier this month.

Riverside swept Thomas Jefferson, 25-11, 25-5, 25-8 Tuesday. The team served 24 aces in the match.

Briley Becker led with 10 kills and five digs. Sydney Joseph scored nine kills and eight aces. Abby Bourgeois had 21 assists and 8 aces. Maddie Duhon had five digs.

The Lady Rebels followed with a 25-12, 25-22, 26-24 sweep of E.D. White.

Joseph led with 14 kills, three aces and four blocks. Becker had 13 kills and 10 digs. Bourgeois had 31 assists and four aces.

Duhon had a whopping 19 digs, which coach Margot Frederick said may have been a career-high for a three-set match.

The West St. John team lost to East Iberville Thursday, 14-25, 25-17, 9-25. The young Lady Rams will open District 6-V play Oct. 6 at Central Catholic of Morgan City.
