RESERVE — An afternoon thundershower settled over the Riverside Academy football field Friday afternoon.
Then, a steady rain throughout the night turned it into a quagmire that swallowed up jerseys and shoes and turned the football in to a brick.
It didn’t stop the Rebels, however.
For the second year in a row, Riverside Academy stunned the Class 5A Hahnville Tigers, this time with a 19-8 victory that was by no means easy or pretty.
The Rebels managed to convert a pair of Tigers turnovers into touchdowns in the first half, then added a messy but nice drive in the third quarter.
Hahnville would not score until the final period after getting some help from the Rebels’ special teams.
A kickoff that would not stay in bounds despite several tries let the Tigers start their one scoring drive at the Rebels’ 42-yard line.
They then added a safety thanks to a bad punt snap.
Neither team moved the ball particularly well. Hahnville mostly handed off to highly-touted slot back Anthony Williams, who ran for 72 yards on 18 carries.
He scored the Tigers’ lone touchdown on a 2-yard run with a little more than nine minutes remaining in the game.
Devante Clark added 61 yards to the running game.
Quarterback Austin Perrin was 2-of-8 for 30 yards and threw two interceptions. Riverside’s Zac Geiger had one and Amauchech Nnaji-Collins nabbed the other.
Riverside had better luck moving the ball.
Jeremy Gibson led the offense with 162 yards on 28 carries.
Quarterback Jordan Loving scored on a 1-yard run with 3:00 remaining in the first quarter, capping a seven-play drive following a Hahnville fumble.
After Nnaji-Collins’ interception with 2:17 remaining in the first half, the Rebels drove from the Tigers’ 37 to the 12 on six plays.
From there, Loving threw to Freddie Means for the score.
The PAT was no good, leaving the Rebels ahead 12-0.
A 65-yard run by Gibson set up the Rebels’ final score. On third-and-goal from the 6, Loving passed to Elliott Veron for the touchdown. Veron’s PAT kick put the Rebels ahead 19-0.
Hahnville got a short field after forcing Veron to rekick three times when the ball went out of bounds.
Pushed up to the Rebels’ 42 yard line, the Tigers needed four plays to score. The PAT snap sailed high, however.
The Tigers then got a safety when a high snap to Tanner Louque sailed out of the end zone.

In another game played in the mud and the muck of Houma, the Comets’ offense struggled. St. Charles rushed for 115 yards and passed for 71.
Narquez Jones led the ground game with 108 yards on 11 carries and scored the Comets’ lone touchdown in the first half.
Andrew Rodrique would add a 22-yard field goal in the second half.
The Terriers rushed for 156 yards, with Michael LeCompte rushing for one touchdown and Andrew Robison another.
Robison was 12 of 20 for 111 yards and one touchdown.

The Rams suffered more than one loss when quarterback Austin Alexander was carted off the field with 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
He was 6 of 7 for 85 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game.
Southern Lab’s Cameron Thomas scored three touchdowns covering 24, 15 and 52 yards.
Madison Prep 16, East St. John 14
Playing without starting quarterback Marquise Darensbourg, the Wildcats fell behind 13-0 before trying to rally.
Shayhan Williams, subbing for the injured Darensbourg, threw two touchdowns on the night.
C.J. Turner scored on a 15-yard pass from Williams. Javon Antonio scored on a 4-yard pass.
