Woman bit, robbed at gunpoint of cell phone

LAPLACE — A local woman was robbed at gunpoint and bit during an altercation that started as a cell phone sale, authorities said.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 1600 block of West Airline Highway in LaPlace at 11:10 p.m. July 23 to meet with a 34-year-old armed robbery victim.

The victim told deputies she saw an ad on Craigslist for the sale of a cell phone and made contact with the seller. They agreed to meet on Whitlow Court for the purchase of the cell phone.

She arrived at 10:45 p.m. July 23, authorities said, and met two men at the location. One man approached her, pointed a long black gun in her face and “asked for everything.”

A brief struggle ensued between the victim and assailant, authorities said, adding the assailant bit the victim. She surrendered $250, and the two men fled on foot together.

The same evening at 11:32 p.m., deputies responded to the LaPlace VFW Hall in LaPlace for a shooting report.

Deputies conducted an investigative stop on a vehicle leaving the area of the shooting and found Durell Fleming, 34, of New Orleans, a passenger, in possession of an AK 47 rifle.

A computer check revealed Fleming is a convicted felon, authorities said.

Detectives arrested Fleming and booked him early Sunday morning with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Over the course of the investigation, detectives identified Fleming and Devin Hebert, 19, of LaPlace as suspects in the armed robbery.

Detectives additionally charged Fleming Tuesday with armed robbery and simple battery.

In addition Tuesday, detectives arrested Hebert at a home on East 22nd Street in Reserve, booking him with principal to armed robbery.

Hebert was arrested Nov. 25, 2015, in connection to a shooting in LaPlace and pleaded guilty to charges during court proceedings. On June 20, 2016, he was released from custody and put on probation. He was booked for violation of probation.
