Harold Keller: Great possibilities come with school

As we approach the beginning of another school year, I’m reminded of the awesome responsibility our school personnel have, especially our teachers and counselors.

I really don’t have many regrets in life. God has been so good to the Kellers, but I’ve often envied the role of a teacher — to have the opportunity to mold and nurture young minds that are hungry for knowledge.

Yes, I do realize that today is different.

The challenge is almost impossible. Many of our children have been abused, neglected, unloved, undisciplined and, in some cases, almost hopeless. I say almost hopeless because I still believe in miracles and the greatest miracle is a changed life.

I know that our teachers can be used by God to make a difference.

Speaking for myself, I know in the past I’ve been guilty of not appreciating, and even criticizing the people responsible for the education of our children.

As we start this school year, my appeal to the parents of school-age children is to get involved, encourage your children and support our teachers.

My message to all the school personnel, administration, teachers, counselors, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and maintenance personnel is to look each day for an opportunity to touch a child in a positive way.

To all the students: Take advantage of the opportunity to get a good education. Be the best person that you can be.

Respect yourself, and other people will respect you. Encourage each other with words and actions, especially a smile and, last but not least, remember our teachers are people, too.

They deserve love in return. Encourage them at every opportunity.

Our school systems in America are in trouble. With man, the situation seems hopeless, but with God, all things are possible.

To all the teachers in the community — keep in mind that no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care. Be challenged to make a difference.

Have a great year!
