BOUTTE — Driving with only one headlight cost a St. John the Baptist Parish deputy his job following his arrest this week on drugs charges.

Barry Conner II, 23, of LaPlace was suspended indefinitely Wednesday and officially terminated Friday, according to Sheriff Mike Tregre. Conner was arrested Wednesday in St. Charles Parish.

Conner held the rank of deputy and was assigned to the Corrections Division in St. John Parish. He started with the Sheriff’s Office in August.

Tregre said he has not talked to Conner since his arrest.

“Let this be a lesson to any other member of the St. John Sheriff’s Office that there are consequences for your actions on and off duty,” Tregre said. “St. Charles Sheriff’s Office did their job as they are sworn to do. On the opposite end, (Conner) did not do his job as he was sworn to do.”

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, a deputy conducted a traffic stop at approximately 1:17 a.m. Wednesday along U.S. 90 in Boutte on a vehicle with a passenger headlight out.

Further investigation revealed the driver, identified as Conner, to be in possession of marijuana, cocaine and a Glock handgun.

Conner of LaPlace was arrested for possession of marijuana, possession of crack cocaine, use of a firearm in the presence of a controlled substance and vehicle required headlights.

Capt. Patrick Yoes of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s office said Conner’s gun charge was issued because he possessed the weapon in the company of narcotics.

“There was one other person in the vehicle,” Yoes said. “That person was not charged.”

According to a published report, authorities found 3.2 grams of marijuana and .1 grams of crack cocaine in Conner’s possession.

According to Tregre, the gun Conner was in possession of was not issued by the St. John Sheriff’s Office and is Conner’s personal weapon.

Conner posted a $25,000 bond Wednesday and was released from  the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

As of Friday morning, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office had not released Conner’s booking photo.

“We take the pictures,” Yoes said. “From here, they get routed to Baton Rouge, and Baton Rouge archives them into their system. Somewhere along the way, Baton Rouge is having a problem with it, and we don’t have a booking photo. It’s not on our end, but it is part of a state system. Until, the state figures out where the picture is, that’s why it’s not populating in the system. Until they get it straight, I don’t have a booking photo.”
