RESERVE — St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District demonstrated caring during a month of activities recently aimed at teaching students the importance of volunteerism.

Each Thursday during the month of December, West St. John Elementary School students wore red to represent the character pillar of caring. Students completed worksheets, filling in the blank with character words such as boastful, bossy, rude, selfish, generous and polite. They also colored “I am Caring” pictures.

“We discussed the meaning of caring and how it relates to their daily lives in the classroom and at home,” said Janet Kinzy, WSJE school counselor.

LaPlace Elementary School students were asked to share a story about a time when they helped a friend. They also learned about Carrie the Caring Cat, a Character Critter created by the LSU AgCenter to teach children about caring and good character.

Each month, school counselors in St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools design activities around a different topic such as caring and volunteerism, saying no to drugs and career choices.
