Keller: Honor America by exercising your privilege to vote

With over 50 people qualifying for public office in St. John Parish, the next six weeks should be exciting.

To all the candidates who decided to offer themselves as public servants, I say congratulations and thanks for participating in the democratic process. Congratulations also to the incumbent office holders who ran unopposed.

While discussing the election Monday morning at PJ’s Coffee Shop, someone asked, “Why do people run for office?”

I shared that for many different reasons, such as, frustration, wanting to make a difference, seeking a job with fringe benefits, a good salary or power.

Like past elections, it’s predicted that only 50 percent or less of registered voters will exercise their right to vote. When a registered person refuses to vote, I think it’s an insult to the men and women who served in the military to protect our rights. I also think it’s a selfish act to sit on the sidelines and complain about our government without participating.

My experience is that those are the people who criticize public officials more than anyone.

Keep in mind that we get the kind of government we deserve and not more or less.

Let me encourage all registered voters to not only vote, but get involved for the candidate you feel will serve not your personal interest, but the best interest of St. John Parish.

To those who refuse to exercise their special freedom by saying that one vote won’t make a difference, be reminded that in my lifetime, a School Board member in St. John Parish was elected by one vote.

In St. James Parish, a parish president was elected by two votes.

Yes, every vote counts!
