Sign of respect: Eliminate r-word use

Forget polite conversation, the r-word has no place in conversation, period.
It’s disrespectful to those with developmental disabilities and certainly is not a synonym for “stupid.”
Thankfully, people across the world — with local support taking root in St. John the Baptist Parish — are raising awareness to stop using the word while also supporting those who suffer with what they can’t control.
The South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority is raising consciousness about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the r-word. Its supporters encourage people to pledge to stop using the r-word and to celebrate the gifts and friendship of residents who live with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.
In support of the cause, the ARC of St. John hosted an event last week celebrating local art, which will be used to create a large composite piece of art that will be displayed at a regional “Art of Respect” show and reception.
From their LaPlace location, volunteers and clients at ARC of St. John advocate with and for all people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities and their families so they live to their fullest potential.
Local advocates are teaming with regional supporters to create a national state of awareness this month based on respect, aptly named the “Art of Respect.”
A River Parishes event is planned at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Destrehan Library. Artwork from surrounding ARCs will be on display, and participants will receive a certificate.
To show more support, Sept. 22 has been named Art of Respect Day in St. John the Baptist Parish.
“The ‘Art of Respect’ signifies the desire to show respect for all people, regardless of their differences,” Parish President Natalie Robottom said.
“We are all born with gifts and talents, we need to look for them in others.”
It’s time those with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities are shown the respect they deserve.
