THIBODAUX — Despite being undersized in comparison to their opponent, the St. Charles Catholic Comets completely owned the season opener in a 31-0 win over the Thibodaux Tigers.
Comets head coach Frank Monica’s players did more than just move the ball, they stuffed it down Thibodaux’s throat, racking up 282 total yards and four touchdowns in comparison to the Tigers’ 89 yards of total offense.
Not only did St. Charles Catholic come out on top, the Comets did it with backup quarterback sophomore Lloyd Nash. After starting quarterback Patrick Ratliff went out with an injury in the second quarter, Nash put together a succession of scoring drives, stating with a 44-yards touchdown pass to running back Justin Loupe with 7:11 left in the second quarter. Kicker Andrew Rodrigue added a filed goal as time expired to make the score 10-0 going into the second half.
In the second half Nash threw for another touchdown, connecting with Tahj Smith in the end zone with a two-yard pass to bring score to 17-0.
Then Eric Lewis, who has committed to Tulane as a safety, got his running game going. Lewis capped off the game with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, ending with 39 yard on nine carries.
The game was big for St. Charles Catholic’s running backs. Smith was the leading ball carrier with 12 rushes for 56 yards and Loupe was the leading receiver with two catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
While the Comets offense played well, the Tigers gave them good field position all night. The average starting position for St. Charles Catholic was its own 48 yard line. In addition, St. Charles Catholic went for it on fourth down four times and was successful each time. In comparison, Thibodaux was two of 11 on third down conversions.
