Keller: Real hurt experienced in each day in our community

The following is a letter I received last week:
“Dear Mr. Keller,
Hello sir. I am writing because I was told that you could help me.
I was arrested in LaPlace in January of this year and a lady in jail gave me your address. I was released in April and it was suggested by the court that I go to a treatment center. I had a warrant from Kenner and now am still in jail in Jefferson Parish.
I’m writing because when I get out, I will be homeless. I am looking for help because I had a drug problem and am now clean and want to stay clean so I can’t stay with anyone I know because they all do drugs.
I don’t have family because my dad died when I was 13 and my mom committed suicide two years ago. My sister committed suicide four years ago and my brother is in prison.
I have been shipped around all my life from foster family to foster family. I have been raped, beaten and thrown aside my whole life and turned to drugs to get away from it all.
I am now 29 years old and I am tired of being that way.
I am looking for help to get away from drugs to stay clean and to get my life straight. I really need some help and was told that you would be able to help me.
Any help you can give me would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you and God bless!
Thank you,
(Name Withheld)
I answered the young lady’s letter and told her I would be willing to do all in my power to get her a place where she can receive help for her drug addiction.
This is only one example of the hurt that many people experience in our communities.
I ask God to give me wisdom in helping people who feel hopeless.
