Monday was much more than green eggs and ham day in some local elementary school cafeterias. It was a time to inspire a love of reading inchildren, truly one of the most noble goals for any caring adult.

It was “Read Across America Day,” and adults convened at the schools to help develop enthusiasm about reading, the cornerstone of education.

“Read Across America,” sponsored chiefly by the National Educators Association, aims at having more children reading more books, more often.

A person who reads is a person who continues to learn throughout a lifetime, taking a greater interest in the world around them and having a greater appreciation for knowledge of all kinds. A child who loves readingwill be a better student and a more refined person as they grow and develop.

In a free society such as America, the more active readers also tend to be the better citizens, taking an interest in their country and voting more often.

It was good to see people Monday, who not only love reading but care about children, come together with the common goal of inspiring good citizenship and self-improvement. It is further demonstration of the love we have for our children.
