Loaded school bus struck, but no children hurt

LAPLACE – A bus with 43 East St. John Elementary School students cut offa car and was struck near the driver’s seat Tuesday morning on Airline Highway.
Lt. Michael Tregre reported that Leona T. Miano, 69, 117 North Apple St.,Garyville, had accidently bypassed Belle Pointe Boulevard’s intersection with Airline Highway.
She attempted to make a U-turn, coming from the eastbound outside lane across the median to the westbound lanes. However, she failed to see a1996 Chevrolet Camero driven by Melissa Wilson 23, 1506 Delta Road, LaPlace, alongside in the inside eastbound lane.
Wilson’s car struck the bus. The Camero’s front-seat passenger, Billy KuhnJr. of Albany, had a minor head injury. Wilson and his 3-year-old son, BillyJr. were not injured. Miano sustained a compound fracture of her wrist.All refused medical aid at the scene, but the bus passengers were all checked at nearby River Parishes Hospital and found to be uninjured.
Miano was cited for careless operation of a motor vehicle, Tregre said.
