ESJ, Lutcher, SCC compete at St. Joseph’s Invitational

BATON ROUGE – St. Charles Catholic, East St. John and Lutcher were amongthe 38 cross country teams competing at the St. Joseph’s AcademyInvitat-ional Saturday morning at Highland Park.
The St. Charles Catholic boys’ team placed 20th with 588 points, whilethe Lady Comets were 22nd with 533 points.
East St. John with 941 points and Lutcher with 1003 placed 36th and 37th,respectively, in the boys’ race.
Top-ranked Episcopal of Baton Rouge placed first in the boys’ category with 36 points, followed by Jesuit (94), Brother Martin (97) and Catholic of New Iberia (179).
In the girls’ race, Mount Carmel was first with 58 points, followed by host St. Joseph’s with 122 and Newman with 151.Mark McBride of Westlake was the top finisher, finishing the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 41 seconds. Gregg Fell was one of four Episcopalrunners in the top 10, finishing in 15:54 to place second.
For the girls, Erin Sims of Pascagoula, Miss., was the top finisher,crossing the line of the 2-mile race in 11:39. Sisters Stacie and KrissieCusimano of Mount Carmel were second and third with times of 12:11 and 12:20, respectively.
Mike Donnelly was the top finisher for the Comets, finishing 97th out of 300 runners with a time of 19:02. Abner Sanders completed the run in19:08, just ahead of teammates Andre Ory (19:09) and Courtney Baloney (19:10).
For the girls, Nicole Guarino set a personal best with a time of 13:59. LizDufresne finished with a time of 15:40.
East St. John was to have competed at a meet at H.L. Bourgeois earlier thisweek but had it canceled to due to rain. The Wildcats’ schedule has alsobeen shortened so that the team competes in only one race a week.
St. Charles Catholic and East St. John will be heading back to HighlandPark today for a even bigger race, the Catholic High Invitational which figures to draw more than 1,400 runners.
