Chapelle edges Lady Comets in SCC Tourney

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic played Archbishop Chapelle to the wire buta late rally led the Chipmunks to a 15-6, 12-15, 15-13 victory over the Lady Comets in the St. Charles Catholic Tournament Saturday morning.In earlier games, Chapelle defeated 15-3, 15-11, while St. CharlesCatholic took a 15-3, 6-15, 15-7 victory over the Lady Cats.
In the first game of the championship match, Chapelle took a 3-0 lead on a dink by Crystal Hastings. St. Charles Catholic came back with kills byKristen Clement and Shannon Dolive.
Two service breaks later, Cristin Clement delivered a cross-court kill and Dolive serve an ace to give the Lady Comets the lead.
Chapelle regained the lead on an ace by Charleen Green. On the Chipmunks’next serve, Hastings delivered three straight aces to give Chapelle a 9-5 advantage.
An ace by Green, a kill by Mary Wanko of a free ball at the net and two Lady Comet errors increased the lead to 13-6. Two serves later, an ace byMary Hoffman and a Lady Comet error gave the Chipmunks the game.
With the score tied at one in the second game, the Chipmunks appeared to take a four-point lead on two aces by Sherri Fourcade and a block by Wanko but Chapelle was ruled to have served out of turn, negating the points.
The Lady Comets took advantage of the break, using blocks by Cristin Clement and Dolive to take a 3-1 lead. An ace by Cristin Clement and a killby Nicole Rome built the cushion to 6-2.
Chapelle came back with a kill by Catey Batte down the right line and a block and a kill by Bridget White to tie the score. St. Charles Catholicwent back ahead, 10-8, on a kill by Cristin Clement.
Chapelle would rally once more, using a spike and an ace by Wanko and two St. Charles Catholic errors to surge back ahead, 12-10. But the Lady Comets would answer with a run of their own with Kristen Clement serving. A dink by Rome, a kill by Cristin Clement and threeChapelle errors gave the Lady Comets the game.
St. Charles Catholic would keep the momentum going in the third game asNicole Scontrino served three straight aces to give the Lady Comets a 5-2 lead. an ace by Wanko and a dink by Green tied the score at 5 before a tipby Cristin Clement down the left line and an ace by Sarah Weber regained the lead for the Lady Comets.
The lead would then bounce back and forth with Chapelle tying the score at 11 on a kill by Wanko. St. Charles Catholic took a 13-11 lead on a kill intothe back row by Cristin Clement before Chapelle used a timeout.
After the timeout, Wanko broke the serve with a kill and an error and a lift by the Lady Comets tied the score. After a timeout by St. CharlesCatholic, Hastings delivered a cross-court kill and White came back with another kill to win the match.
“Lack of consistency is our major downfall,” St. Charles Catholic coachMichelle Dearmitt said.
“With Chapelle, we played with them but our serve-receive was our breakdown. If we had passed better, it could have been a differentoutcome. But for the overall game, we played with them.”St. Charles Catholic fell to 15-3 overall.
