RESERVE – In baseball, it is said that it all begins with the pitcher.

Nothing can happen until he releases that first pitch.

In volleyball, the same is true of the server. A server can keep theopposition off balance, never letting it get into its offense. And it wastheir serving that led the Reserve Christian Lady Eagles to a 15-4, 15-9 victory over Lutheran in the Reserve Christian Tournament Saturday morning.

Reserve Christian would take two out of its three matches in the tournament to improve to 6-2 on the season. The Lady Eagles fell to the St.Charles Catholic junior varsity, 16-14, 15-13, in the opening game of the tournament, and defeated Bethany, 15-6, 15-6, in the finale. ReserveChristian and St. Charles Catholic each finished 2-1, with the Lady Eaglesfinishing first based on a points system.

In Reserve Christian’s victory over Lutheran, the Lady Eagles served 14 aces, led by Katie Millet with 10. Angie Tucker and Amber Keller addedtwo apiece.

Lutheran took an early 3-2 lead in the first game on a kill by Angela Peperone and two Lady Eagle errors. Reserve Christian then rallied behindthe serving of Tucker. Tucker had two aces and Lutheran committed threeerrors, giving the Lady Eagles a 7-3 advantage. Kelly McGee came up with ablock a serve later to make it 8-4.

Millet then took over, serving three consecutive aces. After an error byLutheran, Millet added two more aces to give the Lady Eagles a 14-4 lead.

Reserve Christian would take the game on its next serve as Lutheran returned McGee’s serve into the net.

Lutheran would rebound in the second game to roll off six consecutive points. Rebecca Honoree and Natalie Lampo each had aces and four errorsby Reserve Christian gave Lutheran a 6-0 advantage.

The Lady Eagles began chipping away at the deficit as Millet served three straight aces. After the teams traded points on a kill by Keller and an aceby Lampo, Reserve Christian pulled to within 7-6 on a block by Summer Vicknair.

Reserve Christian again took control of the match with Millet serving three breaks later. After a kill by Ashley Holmes, Millet peppered the leftand right baselines with consecutive aces. Holmes followed with a killinside the back line, giving the Lady Eagles an 11-8 lead.

After an ace by Natalie Peperone, Reserve Christian pulled to within match point on consecutive aces by Keller. The Lady Eagles got the winneron a kill by Vicknair.

“Our serving has really come around,” Reserve Christian coach Mike Marix said. “The girls are really concentrating and taking it seriously. Going toeto toe with St. Charles Catholic was a good sign and defeating Lutheran, aClass A team, was a big win for us.”In other games in the tournament, the St. Charles Catholic JV lost toLutheran, 15-11, 15-8, and defeated Bethany, 15-3, 15-9, and Bethany came away with a 15-13, 15-7 win over Lutheran.
