The heat is on this summer, and juveniles are already involved in seasonal crime, as victims or perpetrators. The discovery of the body of a 16-year-old New Orleans boy in the Bonnet Carre Spillway last week, and the burglary at the Millet Storage facility, with two of the suspects being aged 14 and 15, illustrate the involvement in crime already experienced by juveniles in this area.

It’s not enough to simply know where your children are. Parents mustknow their children’s associates and their activities, their interests and their concerns. Parents also must take an active, participatory role intheir children’s lives.

However, it must always be remembered that the majority of children are not delinquent, and the majority of juveniles will likely not become either the perpetrator or the victim of a serious crime. Most can be trusted, butit is up to the parents to determine whether their children earn that trust.

That can only be done by knowing the children.

Get to know your children better. It’s worth the effort.
