LAPLACE – Fireworks vendors may have to deal with sign regulations should a proposed ordinance get approval from the St. John the BaptistParish Council on Tuesday.

This meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Percy Hebert courthouse annex inLaPlace. It will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a finance committee meeting.The proposed fireworks ordinance amendment, suggested by Councilman Steve Thornton, would mandate each permitted fireworks vendor to be allowed one on-premise sign, not to exceed 4 by 8 by 6 feet.

To get the $30 permit, the vendor would have to provide a construction drawing of the sign and display.

For off-premise signs, vendors would have to abide by all state highway department rules before being considered for parish licensing.

Thornton said the ordinance would also head off year-round displays of fireworks signs, regulate displays and clean up the roadside. He said healso plans to ask for increased police patrols around fireworks stands because of people crossing major highways to get to the stands.

In other agenda business, the council will: Consider change orders in the courthouse renovations projects at the Edgard Courthouse and the Percy Hebert Courthouse Annex. Total cost ofthe project, which includes roof work, painting and renovations of public restrooms for handicapped access, may total more than $800,000, according to Parish President Arnold Labat.

Hear drainage concerns on Alvina Street, Montegut Subdivision.

Hear updates on west bank public works equipment, summer jobs program, sidewalk program, equalization implementation, Woodland area drainage work and on the building renovations.

Hear an update on the animal shelter.

Discuss playground equipment at Cambridge Park.

Honor the AAU boys 11-year-old and under state basketball champions.

Consider changing the next meeting date from June 29 to June 28.
