Due to the number of families of St. Peter School in Reserve who havebeen affected by Sunday’s bus accident, the middle school play “The Great Ghost Chase” has been rescheduled from Friday, May 14, to Thursday, May 20. It will be held in the school auditorium at 7 p.m.*** The St. Peter School Parent-Teacher Club meeting originally scheduled fortoday has been postponed to Monday, May 17, at 7 p.m. The school isasking all past officers who received an invitation to the meeting to note the date change.

*** The Senior Health Festival sponsored by the Senior Day Program at River Parishes Hospital and Maison Oaks Assisted Living Apartments scheduled for yesterday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in LaPlace will be rescheduled to a later date this summer.

*** Have you ever wondered who might be hiding in your family tree? Many people today are becoming interested in researching family history and ancestral lines, referred to as genealogy. Some are uncovering everyonefrom pirates to patriots to kings in their family tree.

If you are interested in learning about tracing your “roots,” you are invited to a family history fair being sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in LaPlace on May 22 from 2-6 p.m. at the Latter DaySaints Chapel.

The fair will feature several booths to help teach basic fundamentals of researching genealogy as well as what to do when you have a problem.

Mary Duhe and Shirley Terrio, representatives from the local genealogical society, will have information on resources available in our area.

A representative from the St. John Parish Clerk of Court’s office will beavailable with information on local records.

Several computers will be set up to help you get started, so bring whatever you have with you. For those who do not wish to use computers,blank forms (family group sheets and lineage charts) will be available.

The family history fair is free to the public. The chapel is located off newHighway 51 at the corner of Palmetto and Indigo Parkway. For moreinformation, call 652-8879 or 651-3462.

*** Catholics throughout the River Parishes are being asked to join the rest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans in contributing to the worldwide charitable works of Pope Paul II when the annual Peter’s Pence collection is taken up on the weekend of May 22-23.

Archbishop Francis B. Schulte said that “by contributing to this specialappeal, we stand with the Holy Father as her responds to the most needy throughout the world. Through this collection the Holy Father providesemergency assistance to those who suffer as a result of war, oppression and natural disasters.”In his pastoral letter on preparing the church for the great Jubilee Year 2000, the Pope John Paul makes it clear that practicing justice through charity is a hallmark of a renewed and faithful people.

*** A retirement reception honoring the Rev. Major and LaRue Speights will beheld May 29 from 7-9 p.m. at the Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet Schoolauditorium.

A homecoming worship service will be held the following day, May 30, at First Baptist Church of LaPlace, where Speights has been pastor for more than 27 years.

Speights is retiring from the pulpit effective June 1. Mrs. Speights isretiring at the end of the school year after many years as an English teacher at East St. John High and Leon Godchaux High schools.Though retiring, the couple do not plan to leave the LaPlace area and will remain members of First Baptist Church.Back to Top
