Spivey, relay team lead Destrehan

DESTREHAN – Amanda Spivey set the Destrehan girls track team up for a victory in the Destrehan Wildcat Invitational Friday afternoon. The LadyCats’ 1600-meter relay team sealed the deal.
Spivey won three events, the triple, long and high jumps, and the relay team placed first as the Lady Cats edged East St. John, 114-113, for themeet title. The teams will square off again Friday in the District 6-5Ameet.
West Feliciana was third with 78 points, followed by Carver (77), O.P.Walker (43) and West St. John (27).East St. John’s 800-meter relay team pulled off an upset against St.Augustine to help the Wildcats finish second in the boys’ competition with 84 points. St. Augustine took the team title with 112 points. Destrehanplaced third with 74 points, followed by West Feliciana (70), West St.
John (58), O.P. Walker (57) and Hahnville 36.In the girls’ competition, Destrehan went into the final event trailing East St. John. But the Lady Cats’ 1600-meter relay team crossed the line atfour minutes, 21 seconds, just ahead of Fortier (4:23). East St. John wasthird in 4:26.
Spivey overcame an intermittent rain to capture the meet’s Outstanding Field Events Female award. Spivey edged out teammate Joevone Markey inthe high jump, clearing the bar at five feet. Markey was second at 4-10.Spivey and Markey also placed one-two in the triple jump with efforts of 34-10 and 32-0, respectively. And in the long jump, Spivey had a bestjump of 15-6 1/2. In second was East St. John’s Victoria Jackson with ajump of 14-9.
East St. John’s Kovanna Reese took first in the shot put with a throw of32-2 1/2. Hahnville’s Lashondria Lorio was second with a throw of 30-5.Courtney Drayton of East St. John captured the javelin with a throw of100-3 1/2.
In the track events, Carver’s Sonya Hill won Outstanding Track honors after winning the 400 and placing second in the 100. East St. John’s andDestrehan’s relay teams placed second and third, respectively, in the 800- and 400-meter relays.
In the boys’ competition, the East St. John 800-meter relay team ran a1:30.65 to defeat St. Augustine by a second. St. Augustine came back towin the 400-meter relay with O.P. Walker taking the 1600.East St. John’s Chris Bush won the long jump with a jump of 22-3. DamianRichard of Destrehan was second with a jump of 21-9, followed by teammate Traun Smith (21-3). Smith came back to win the triple jumpwith a jump of 48-6 1/2, defeating teammate Carlo Eugene (47-1 1/2) and Bush (46-4 3/4). West St. John’s Donriel Louis, competing in the highjump this season for the first time since his freshman year, won the event with a jump of 5-10.
West St. John’s Howard won the javelin with a throw of 156-4. East St.John’s Darryl Stevens was second with a throw of 155-4. In the discus,Destrehan’s Mike Robins was second with a throw of 121-8, followed by West St. John’s Anthony Antonio’s 106-9. The Rams’ Coy Miller was thirdin the shot put with a throw of 41-6. West Feliciana’s Curtis Leonard wonboth events to win Outstanding Field honors.
Destrehan’s Josh Blackwell was second in the pole vault with a vault of 12-0.
